Senegal launches three fish processing units in Casamance
Senegal’s Minister of Fisheries and Maritime Economy, Amy Mara Dièye, has officially launched construction on three modern fish processing units in the Casamance region. The project, known as ‘Anaré Difal’ (meaning ‘women of the sea’ in the Diola language), will establish facilities in Mangacounda, Baghagha, and Fanda.
These infrastructures, located across the Ziguinchor and Sédhiou regions, aim to improve working conditions for women processors, reduce post-capture losses, and increase local incomes. The initiative focuses on providing structured environments for the conservation, drying, smoking, and processing of seafood.
The project is funded by Japan and implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in partnership with the Senegalese Ministry of Fisheries. It is intended to bolster food sovereignty and economic autonomy for women in the artisanal fishing sector.
