Food sovereignty and processing initiatives in Casamance
Overview
Efforts to enhance food sovereignty and reduce production losses in Senegal’s Casamance region have progressed through both agricultural and maritime initiatives.
In Ziguinchor, the ‘Salouma’ project, led by the World Food Programme, recently concluded a 30-day training program for 30 young people. This initiative aims to establish a Post-Harvest Loss Management Unit to convert agricultural waste into employment opportunities and strengthen community autonomy.
Simultaneously, the ‘Anaré Difal’ project has launched the construction of three modern fish processing units in Mangacounda, Baghagha, and Fanda. Funded by Japan and implemented by the FAO in partnership with the Senegalese Ministry of Fisheries, these facilities are designed to improve working conditions for women, reduce post-capture losses, and increase local incomes within the artisanal fishing sector.
