Dakar 2026: Preparations accelerate for Africa's first Youth Olympic Games

Senegal is intensifying preparations for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games (YOG), scheduled to take place from October 31 to November 13, 2026. This event marks the first time an Olympic competition will be hosted on the African continent. Competitions will be distributed across three main geographic sectors: Dakar, Diamniadio, and Saly.

Government officials are focusing on critical infrastructure and sanitation. The Minister of Hydraulics and Sanitation, Cheikh Tidiane Dièye, has been inspecting sanitation works in the capital to ensure the city is ready and to mitigate flood risks. Additionally, security measures are being evaluated by military leadership, and sanitation agencies like SONAGED have mobilized personnel for cleaning operations.

Organizers have released ticketing details, including VIP box prices of 2,250,000 FCFA and various categories ranging from 1,000 to 40,000 FCFA. While most events require paid admission, certain disciplines such as road cycling and the triathlon at Saly Beach West will be accessible to spectators for free. The Games will feature approximately 2,700 athletes from over 206 nations competing across various disciplines, including emerging sports like breaking, skateboarding, and 3x3 basketball.
