Senegal hosting 2026 Youth Olympic Games

Overview

Senegal is finalizing preparations for the 2026 Summer Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Dakar, scheduled for October 31 to November 13, 2026. As the first African nation to host an Olympic event of this scale, the games are viewed as a major driver for economic, social, and institutional development.

Competitions will be distributed across three main geographic sectors: Dakar, Diamniadio, and Saly. Infrastructure developments have progressed with the opening of the Regional Express Train (TER) extension, connecting the Diamniadio–Blaise Diagne International Airport (AIBD) to the capital to facilitate transport for approximately 30,000 accredited participants. Security measures are also being finalized, with the Ministry of Armed Forces evaluating the role of the national Gendarmerie in protecting competition sites and maintaining public order.

President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has emphasized that the Games represent a long-term national commitment to developing a sports industry and enhancing Senegal's international standing, providing opportunities in tourism, hospitality, and digital services. To ensure global visibility, competitions will be broadcast by hundreds of television channels, including the state broadcaster RTS and the Olympic Channel.

On the athletic front, the Senegalese National Olympic and Sports Committee announced that 136 athletes will represent the country across 23 disciplines. The games will feature approximately 2,700 athletes from over 206 nations. While most events require paid admission, certain disciplines, including road cycling and the triathlon at Saly Beach West, will be accessible to spectators for free.
