Senegal opposition figure calls for National Assembly dissolution

In Senegal, former deputy and historical opposition figure Talla Sylla has issued an open letter to President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, calling for the dissolution of the National Assembly in December 2026. This proposed date aligns with the first constitutionally available window, as the law prohibits dissolution until two years have passed since the November 2024 legislative elections. Sylla advocates for a broad national dialogue involving political parties, civil society, religious authorities, and economic actors to ensure a peaceful political environment.

The proposal arrives amid a period of institutional discussion. While the ruling Pastef coalition holds a comfortable majority in the assembly, various voices have weighed in on the potential for dissolution. Some, such as Professor Diégane Sène, have previously called it "inevitable," while political scientist Mamadou Sy Albert has advised against it, arguing that there is no current institutional deadlock and that a dissolution could pose significant political risks given the President's current popularity levels.

Separately, the Collective Diaspora Yenne-Toubab-Dialaw has addressed President Faye and the APIX Director General regarding a controversial 600-hectare project in Toubab-Dialaw. The group expressed deep indignation over plans to restart operations for a Special Economic Zone, citing fears that local populations could lose homes, lands, and community infrastructure.
