President Bassirou Diomaye Faye visits Touba to mourn Mouride leader
President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, accompanied by First Lady Absa Faye and a senior delegation, travelled to Touba on 6 June 2026 to convey the nation’s condolences after the death of Serigne Cheikh Saliou Mbacké, the eldest son and khalife of the late Serigne Saliou Mbacké. He was received by the Mouride Khalife General, Serigne Mountakha Bassirou Mbacké, and later met Serigne Bassirou Mbacké, the new khalife of the family, at the family residence near the Grand Mosque.
During the visit the president praised the spiritual contributions of the deceased, prayed for his soul, and affirmed the state’s respect for all religious leaders. The Khalife General, through his spokesperson, urged President Faye to respect every religious guide, to safeguard national peace, and to work on easing the daily hardships of Senegalese citizens.
