Senegal 2026: Federation crisis, CAF fine, hearings delayed
Entities: Senegal Football Federation · Government of Senegal · Pape Thiaw · Djireye Clotilde Coly · Senegal national football team (Lions)
Overview
The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) remains under intense scrutiny. In July 2026 CAF fined the FSF $615,000 and suspended coach Pape Bouna Thiaw for five matches after he disclosed unpaid salaries and bonuses from the $11.6 million AFCON 2025 prize pool. The same month the Ministry of Youth and Sports ordered the FSF to cease all public statements about the World Cup to preserve national calm following the team’s round‑of‑16 exit, and the National Order of Physicians defended the team doctor against mischaracterisations.
Parliamentary hearings that were to begin on 22 July to examine Senegal’s 2026 World Cup preparation were postponed on 21 July due to scheduling constraints in the National Assembly. Deputy El Hadji Gueye confirmed the delay, assuring that the inquiry will resume once a new timetable is set, reaffirming the commitment to transparency, good governance and accountability.
Further, the FSF dismissed coach Pape Thiaw after the Lions’ 2‑3 loss to Norway in the round of 16. The federation announced a severance package of 240 million CFA (equivalent to eight months’ salary) and cited a contract signed in June 2026 that the government, the third‑party payer, had refused to fund. The dispute may proceed to court.
Calls for a local coach and for unity persist, with former captain Kalidou Koulibaly urging the federation to resolve the disputes before the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
