Senegal President launches Sebikotane TER station and outlines national rail expansion

President Bassirou Diomaye Faye officially inaugurated the construction of a new multimodal Train Express Régional (TER) station in Sebikotane on 20 June. The station, part of Phase 2 of the Dakar‑Diamniadio‑Blaise Diagne line, is slated for operation by September ahead of the Youth Olympic Games that Senegal will host.

Faye also announced a longer‑term plan to extend the TER network to other regions, including a line toward Tambacounda. Authorities say the Sebikotane hub will ease highway congestion, promote urban growth, and generate jobs through associated commercial, hotel and health‑centre projects. The launch coincided with the inauguration of a textile factory in Diamniadio, expected to create about 200 direct jobs, especially for women and youth.

The project is presented as a catalyst for regional integration, economic development and reduced travel times across the country.
