Senegal promotes local textiles and artisanal craftsmanship

Senegal is actively working to promote its local textile and artisanal sectors through both grassroots economic activity and high-level international diplomacy. In Dakar, the Colobane Gambie market serves as a vital hub for the textile industry, supporting a value chain of fabric vendors, tailors, and designers. Local businesses, such as Wa Keur Serigne Bassirou Kébé et Frères, report high demand for materials like linen and cotton, serving customers from across the sub-region, including Mali and Guinea.

On a strategic level, Senegal’s Minister of Culture, Handicrafts, and Tourism, Alpha Thiam, met with Jean-Baptiste Voisin, Strategy Director at LVMH, to discuss cooperation. The goal of these discussions is to increase the international visibility of Senegalese craftsmanship and create bridges between local artisans and global luxury houses. This initiative aims to leverage the country’s diverse raw materials and creative traditions to expand market opportunities for the ‘Made in Senegal’ brand.
