Senegal textile and artisanal industry development

Overview

Senegal is pursuing multi-level strategies to promote and revitalize its textile and artisanal sectors. At the grassroots and international levels, the country is leveraging local hubs like the Colobane Gambie market to support a regional value chain of vendors and designers. Simultaneously, the government is seeking global luxury partnerships, exemplified by discussions between the Minister of Culture, Handicrafts, and Tourism and LVMH leadership to increase the visibility of the ‘Made in Senegal’ brand.

Complementing these efforts, the Ministry of Employment, Vocational Training and Technical Education has entered a strategic partnership with Domitexka Saloum to strengthen industrial capacity. Supported by 60 million CFA francs from the Technical and Vocational Training Financing Fund (3FPT), this initiative focuses on vocational training in trades such as dyeing, weaving, and spinning. The goal is to ensure local cotton is processed domestically, a move that could potentially generate over 4,000 direct jobs.
