Senegal religious leaders call for unity ahead of Gamou celebrations

Religious leaders in Senegal are preparing for the upcoming Gamou (Mawlid) celebrations, emphasizing spiritual renewal and social cohesion.

In Médina Baye, Cheikh Mahy Aliou Cissé, spokesperson for the Khalife general of the Faydatou Tidjaniya, announced the official launch of activities for the international Mawlid. He stressed that the event should serve as a time for spiritual transmission and a return to the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad, rather than just a festive occasion. The celebration aims to strengthen community bonds through faith, solidarity, and Quranic study.

In Tivaouane, the theme for the 2026 Gamou focuses on 'Tawhid' (the oneness of God). Serigne Abdoul Hamid Sy, coordinator of the Zawiya Tijaniyya communication cell, stated that this theme is intended to promote unity in a world divided by conflict. The religious leadership is calling for social cohesion and peace within Senegal, urging political and religious actors to prioritize mutual respect and the common good to preserve national stability.
