Religious leadership and social cohesion in Senegal
Overview
In Senegal, religious and political leaders have focused on social cohesion and infrastructure. President Bassirou Diomaye Faye met with the General Caliph of Darou Salam Chérif to discuss development needs, including the renovation of the Kataba–Darou Salam road and improved infrastructure for pilgrims.
Following these discussions, religious leaders in Médina Baye and Tivaouane began preparations for the Gamou (Mawlid) celebrations, emphasizing spiritual renewal and the theme of ‘Tawhid’ (the oneness of God) to promote unity.
As preparations for Gamou 2026 continue, Prime Minister Ahmadou Al Aminou Mohamed Lô has met with religious figures, such as Archbishop André Guèye in Dakar, to reaffirm state support for religious communities. The Khalife General of the Tidianes, Serigne Babacar Sy Mansour, has reinforced the theme of ‘Unicity’ (Tawhid) to promote social cohesion.
To manage the influx of millions of pilgrims, Sonatel is deploying technical upgrades, including increased 5G, 4G+, and 3G capacities, mobile base stations, and expanded fiber optic access in centers like Tivaouane, Kaolack, and Ndiassane. The telecommunications group is also distributing water and medical supplies. Additionally, the DER/FJ is engaging with religious communities in Tivaouane to support local economic initiatives and entrepreneurship for women and youth.
