Senegal sees Assembly vice‑presidents resign and archives director quit amid political crisis

Two vice‑presidents of Senegal’s National Assembly – Ismaïla Diallo (first vice‑president) and Cheikh Thioro Mbacké (third vice‑president) – tendered their resignations, prompting a reshuffle of the parliamentary bureau. The Assembly announced it will submit a constitutional revision proposal drafted by a Pastef group of deputies, following a constitutional council decision earlier in May.

In a separate but related development, Mohamed Lat Sack Diop resigned as Director of the National Archives. In his letter he cited a political break with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, reaffirmed loyalty to former prime minister Ousmane Sonko, and warned he did not want to be “accountable for the second part of the mandate.” Diop highlighted budget cuts and urged the government to provide adequate resources for the archives.

Both resignations occur against a backdrop of tension between President Faye’s administration and the Pastef‑led parliamentary majority, reflecting broader instability in Senegal’s political landscape.
