Senegal sees progress in cultural restitution and digital security

A new law passed in France has created a legal framework to facilitate the restitution of cultural artifacts to their countries of origin, offering hope for the return of the Ségou Treasure to Senegal. This legislation aims to address colonial-era spoliation and provides a pathway for various nations to reclaim historical heritage.

In a separate domestic development, Senegal’s Ministry of Telecommunications and Digital Economy has introduced a bill to strengthen cybersecurity and digital sovereignty. The proposed law focuses on protecting critical information infrastructures and treating information security as a matter of national security. Key measures include increasing personal data protection, securing connected objects, and requiring that public data be hosted within Senegalese territory to reduce dependence on foreign infrastructure.
