Senegal to recruit 2,527 teachers for 2026-2027 school year

The Senegalese Ministry of National Education (MEN) has announced a special recruitment drive for 2,527 teachers to prepare for the 2026-2027 school year. This initiative follows a similar recruitment of 2,000 teachers in 2025, bringing the total number of teachers integrated through these special measures to 4,527.

Selected candidates will undergo immersion training at regional education personnel training centers before being deployed to ensure they are ready to begin duties by October 2026. While the ministry aims to address a critical shortage of staff and improve student supervision, the move has raised concerns among education professionals.

Sémou Ndao, Secretary General of the Union of National Education Inspectors (SIENS), noted that while the recruitment is a necessity, there are concerns regarding whether the urgency to fill classrooms might compromise the quality and standards of teaching. Critics question if the focus on quantity over competence could lead to a long-term decline in educational standards.
