Senegal education sector labor and recruitment tensions

Education unions in Senegal have expressed dissatisfaction with the government over delays in implementing previous agreements. The G7 coalition, representing major education and training unions, highlighted bottlenecks such as slow reviews of the remuneration system, debates over raising the retirement age to 65, and issues with the digitalization of exam allowances.

Unions also reported that the Ministry of National Education has failed to meet financial commitments for Universal Distance Learning (FDU), leading to suspended training programs and examination difficulties. Furthermore, flaws in the biometric auditing of civil servants have reportedly hindered the enrollment of many agents.

In response to educational needs, the Ministry of National Education announced the recruitment of 2,527 new teachers for the 2026-2027 school year to improve student supervision and human resources. Concurrently, the National Framework for KIIRAAY Teachers (CNEK) has launched a national mobilization effort to unite public and private sector teachers, aiming to advocate for teacher rights and professional dignity through a new ‘National Community’ structure.
