Senegal education sector labor and recruitment tensions

Education unions in Senegal, led by the G7 coalition, continue to express dissatisfaction with the government over delays in implementing previous agreements. Selected candidates will undergo immersion training at regional centers to prepare for deployment by October 2026. However, Sémou Ndao, Secretary General of the Union of National Education Inspectors (SIENS), noted concerns that the urgency to fill classrooms might compromise teaching quality, questioning if a focus on quantity over competence could lead to a long-term decline in standards.

Concurrently, the preselection phase for the 2026 Student-Teacher Recruitment Competition (CREM) has commenced, with 111,630 candidates registered nationwide. In the Diourbel region, 6,655 candidates are participating across 21 examination centers.

Finally, the National Framework for KIIRAAY Teachers (CNEK) has launched a national mobilization effort to advocate for professional dignity and rights through a national tour.
