Senegal's Grand Magal 2026 triggers unity appeal, road safety warning and holiday debate

During the official ceremony of the 132nd Grand Magal of Touba, Senegal's interior minister Mouhamadou Makhtar Cissé led a high‑level government delegation and called for national unity and social cohesion. He also warned of a surge in road accidents, citing a provisional toll of 21 deaths and urging concrete actions to restore order on the roads.

Former journalist and diplomat Souleymane Jules Diop sparked debate by arguing that granting a public holiday on the Monday after the Magal would impose a heavy economic cost, warning that a day without work would reduce production and hurt the country's growth.

In Italy, the Casa Sankara centre in San Severo organised a commemorative event for the Grand Magal, highlighting the spiritual legacy of Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba and promoting social integration projects for migrants.
