Grand Magal 2026: safety drive and transport updates

Overview

In early July 2026 Senegal began expanding water infrastructure in Touda ahead of the Grand Magal pilgrimage, adding boreholes and reinforcing security forces. By late July President Bassirou Diomaye Faye visited Touba, laying a foundation stone for a new private hospital and overseeing the deployment of 50 water‑tanker trucks and the commissioning of additional boreholes, bringing operational wells to 48. The Ministry of Health mobilised 6,000 agents and over 180 health points, backed by a 71.5 million CFA medicines budget. On 2 August the interior minister called for national unity, warned of a provisional toll of 21 road deaths and sparked debate over a possible public holiday, while diaspora groups in Italy marked the occasion.

Following the ceremony, Transport Minister Abdoul Ahad Ndiaye announced a "Magal zero accident" programme. A provisional tally recorded 278 road accidents, 22 deaths and 565 injuries – a reduction from the previous year – and the government pledged free vehicle checks, expanded roadside assistance, public awareness campaigns and a forthcoming decree to update the road code and issue an accident‑analysis bulletin. Meanwhile, the Grand Trains du Sénégal transported 9,600 pilgrims, a 10 % rise, aided by electronic ticketing that eased congestion on a six‑kilometre highway bottleneck, with plans to add more rolling stock for future pilgrimages.
