On 25 July 2026 President Bassirou Diomaye Faye announced the creation of a new political party, Sénégal En Mouvement vers l’Excellence (SEME), marking his break with the former PASTEF coalition and providing a formal vehicle for his presidential agenda.

Several political figures have aligned with the new formation: Déthié Diouf said his VISA party will dissolve to join SEME, former senators publicly pledged support, and a wave of resignations from PASTEF members has been reported, reflecting a rapid re‑organisation of the presidential majority.

In parallel, Faye received the 2024‑2025 reports of the National Observatory of Places of Deprivation of Liberty, committing ministries to implement more than a hundred recommendations on prison conditions, torture prevention, over‑crowding and the use of detection technology.

He also hosted Gambian Foreign Minister Sering Modou Njie, reaffirming Senegal‑Gambia cooperation and Senegal’s role in CEDEAO. The president’s outreach to former legislators and local officials underscores a consolidation of power amid ongoing tension with opposition leader Ousmane Sonko.
