Senigallia sea turtle hatchlings face risks from traffic and light pollution

In Senigallia, Italy, newborn Caretta caretta sea turtles emerged from a previously unidentified nest between August 30 and August 31. The emergence prompted an immediate response from the Fondazione Cetacea, the Coast Guard, and the Carabinieri Forestali CITES of Ancona.

While some hatchlings successfully reached the sea, the event highlighted significant environmental risks. Light pollution and vehicle traffic caused disorientation among the turtles; nine hatchlings were accidentally struck and killed by vehicles on the road behind the beach.

Experts, including Dr. Chiara Roncari, have established a monitoring presence in the area to protect subsequent emergences. Following the initial findings, additional hatchlings were observed emerging approximately 96 hours later.
