Seoul Asan Medical Center develops AI blood test for colorectal cancer
Researchers at Seoul Asan Medical Center have developed an AI-driven blood test that can diagnose colorectal cancer with high accuracy. The study, led by Professors Byeon Jeong-sik and Hong Seung-wook, utilizes cell-free DNA (cfDNA) analysis to identify cancer markers in the bloodstream.
In a study involving 1,677 participants, the method achieved a diagnostic sensitivity of 90.4%, significantly higher than the 70-80% sensitivity typically seen in traditional fecal occult blood tests. The test also demonstrated a specificity of 94.7%. Notably, the method maintained high performance across different stages, showing 100% sensitivity for stage 4 colorectal cancer and 90% for early-stage cancer that is treatable via endoscopy.
The research, conducted in collaboration with GC Genome, uses Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) and deep learning to analyze DNA fragment length, terminal structures, and genomic distribution. The findings were published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology.
