AI integration in South Korean healthcare

Overview

South Korean medical institutions and regulatory bodies are increasingly integrating artificial intelligence into clinical diagnostics and administrative workflows.

Researchers at Seoul Asan Medical Center, in collaboration with GC Genome, have developed an AI-driven blood test using cell-free DNA (cfDNA) analysis to diagnose colorectal cancer. In a study of 1,677 participants, the method achieved a diagnostic sensitivity of 90.4% and a specificity of 94.7%, maintaining 100% sensitivity for stage 4 cancer. Clinical adoption includes the ‘DrNoon CVD’ at Hongseong Medical Center, which uses retinal imaging to predict cardiovascular risks like myocardial infarction within one minute. Additionally, the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRA) is applying deep learning to medical image reviews, such as knee joint fields, to assist in medical fee reviews while maintaining that final decisions remain with human personnel.

National R&D projects continue to accelerate this integration. Under the ‘Korean ARPA-H Project,’ institutions like Hwasun Chonnam National University Hospital are building AI-based cancer management networks, Gachon University is developing elderly pain management platforms, and Chungnam National University Hospital is working on the ‘KoreaHealth.ai’ platform for clinical task management.

In the pharmaceutical and administrative sectors, K-MEDI Hub has increased investment in AI-driven drug discovery to 74.16 billion KRW. EzCaretech is leading a national project for AI cloud-based hospital information systems, and Bit Computer has launched ‘Medigent AI’ for insurance claims. At the KIMES BUSAN 2026 exhibition, HIRA showcased startup innovations including Pill Good’s AI pharmacy kiosk, A.D. Cure’s voice AI for heart failure, and Wellysis’s generative AI ECG platform.
