Seoul baby box initiative has protected over 2,000 infants
Since 2009, a humanitarian initiative known as the ‘baby box’ at Jusarang Church in the Gwanak District of Seoul, South Korea, has provided a safe haven for over 2,000 infants. Established by Pastor Lee Jong-rak, the project aims to prevent infants from being abandoned in harsh outdoor conditions where they face life-threatening risks.
The specialized box is built into a concrete wall and features a heating system to maintain a stable temperature for the babies. When an infant is placed inside, sensors trigger an alarm that alerts staff, who are on duty 24/7, to move the child to a secure care room. The box includes a prompt asking parents to ‘please record the baby’s date of birth.’
Beyond providing immediate physical safety, the initiative focuses on counseling and support. Staff attempt to locate and speak with parents to understand their circumstances and offer assistance—such as supplies for single mothers—in hopes of preventing abandonment. However, the facility faces ongoing challenges in maintaining sufficient financial and human resources to meet the needs of impoverished families.
