Seoul Police release identity of suspect in mother-in-law murder and wife kidnapping
The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency has released the identity, age, and mugshot of 26-year-old Kim Seong-woo, who is accused of murdering his mother-in-law and kidnapping his wife in Songpa-gu on May 11. The decision to disclose his information follows a review committee's determination that the crime was exceptionally cruel, the evidence is sufficient, and disclosure serves the public interest by preventing recidivism.
Investigators believe the attack may have been premeditated, noting that Kim waited near the scene for approximately four hours while armed. Family members claim the motive was retaliation following the wife's reports of domestic violence and a lawsuit to annul their marriage. Police are currently focusing their investigation on proving this retaliatory motive and plan to transfer the suspect to the prosecution on May 20.
This incident has intensified discussions regarding the inadequacy of current measures to prevent relationship-based crimes. Experts argue that existing protections, such as electronic monitoring and smartwatches, are insufficient. There are growing calls for law enforcement to shift from evaluating arrest warrants based on flight risk to focusing on the objective risk of recidivism in cases involving domestic violence and stalking.
