Violent crime incidents in Seoul

Overview

Two separate violent incidents involving family members have been reported in Seoul.

In Songpa-gu, police identified 26-year-old Kim Seong-woo as the suspect in a May 11 case involving the murder of his mother-in-law and the kidnapping of his wife. Authorities believe the attack may have been premeditated retaliation for domestic violence reports and a marriage annulment lawsuit. The disclosure of the suspect’s identity followed a determination that the crime was “exceptionally cruel.”

In a separate May 22 incident in the Gangseo District, a woman in her 40s was arrested for the murder of her 60-year-old mother. The suspect initially provided conflicting statements to police regarding the victim’s identity and alleged the use of poisoned food, though investigators found no evidence of poison. While the suspect has denied the charges, police noted a history of verbal abuse directed toward the victim.
