Sepang F1 event generates nearly RM950 million economic impact

The hosting of the F1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) from October 2 to 4 generated an economic impact of nearly RM950 million for Malaysia, according to Youth and Sports Minister Dr. Mohammed Taufiq Johari.

Data from Formula One Management (FOM) indicates the event attracted approximately 261,000 spectators over the weekend, with 103,000 attending on race day. The event reached a global audience of over 827 million viewers. Attendance figures included more than 97,000 tickets sold, 50,000 international tourists, and roughly 5,000 foreign workers.

Unlike previous hosting models, the Bahrain International Circuit bore the hosting rights costs, allowing Malaysia to benefit economically without the high licensing fees. This arrangement supported local sectors including tourism, hospitality, aviation, and small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

A comprehensive cost-benefit analysis is currently being conducted by SIC and an appointed consultancy firm. The results of this evaluation will serve as a basis for the government's decision regarding the potential for Malaysia to host Formula 1 races in the future.
