September gardening: Best vegetables to plant as weather cools

As temperatures begin to cool in September, garden designer Jo McGarry suggests that it is an ideal time to plant cool-weather vegetables that require little space and offer quick harvests.

Recommended crops include spinach, which thrives in cooler conditions and can continue to grow in cold weather if planted in well-draining, organic-rich soil. Arugula (rocket) is also highlighted for its fast growth and peppery flavor, making it suitable for autumn harvests if protected from heavy winds. Additionally, scallions are noted as an excellent option for those with limited gardening space, such as balconies.
