Serasa survey shows 47% of Brazilians view books as investment
A new survey by Serasa in partnership with the research platform Opinion Box reveals that 47% of Brazilian respondents consider buying a book an investment, even as 70% say they have skipped purchases because of budget constraints. The study also found that 54% bought at least one book in the past year and that 73% still prefer printed books over e‑books (23%) and audiobooks (4%).
Readers cite sensory pleasure as the main reason for choosing print (58%), while e‑book users value convenience (64%) and portability (60%). Discounts drive impulse buying, with 41% admitting they purchase more books than needed when offers appear, and 31% buy a new title every two to three months, typically spending up to R$200 annually. Social media influences buying decisions: 51% discover new titles through these platforms, 72% have bought a book after a recommendation, and 64% add titles to wish‑lists because of online exposure.
