Serbia adopts 2026–2034 agriculture and rural development strategy

The Serbian government has adopted the Agriculture and Rural Development Strategy for the period 2026–2034. The plan aims to reform the incentive system by shifting public support from maintaining the status quo toward investments in modernization, new equipment, mechanization, and innovation to increase production efficiency and quality.

To combat increasingly frequent droughts and unstable weather, the strategy includes a dedicated program for irrigation and drainage, alongside the implementation of ‘climate-smart agriculture.’ The document also emphasizes strengthening the market position of producers through the establishment of producer organizations and national associations for specific agricultural branches.

Other key objectives include the modernization of markets, the appointment of a food ombudsman, and the integration of agricultural advisory services with science and innovation systems. Additionally, the strategy proposes scholarships for children of agricultural producers studying agronomy and veterinary sciences to ensure long-term sector sustainability and food sovereignty.
