Serbia agricultural producers face rising costs and falling prices

Agricultural producers in Serbia are facing a widening gap between declining production prices and rising operational costs. Data from the Republic Statistical Office indicates that producer prices for agricultural and fishery products in July 2026 were 12.2 percent lower than in the same month the previous year. Furthermore, production costs for reproductive materials and services rose by 2.5 percent in the second quarter of 2026.

To combat low margins on raw goods, some producers are turning to value-added processing. In the Valjevo region, farmers are increasingly transforming fruits like plums into jams, preserves, syrups, and liqueurs to secure higher value and year-round sales. This shift is often supported by subsidies from the National Employment Service, allowing producers to supplement incomes and mitigate the impact of weak negotiating positions in the supply chain.

The complex journey from farm to consumer—involving collectors, storage, transport, and retail—contributes to high consumer prices even as producer earnings fall. Farmers often lack the storage infrastructure necessary to wait for better market prices, forcing them to accept immediate, lower offers.
