Croatia and Balkans face massive holiday traffic jams

Heavy traffic congestion has spread across the Balkans at the start of the holiday season. On the Croatia‑Bosnia border, kilometre‑long queues have formed at crossings such as Doljani, Bijača, Gradiška, Brod, Velika Kladuša and Orašje, with motorists waiting several hours for entry and exit. The new Entry/Exit System for Schengen is adding processing time for first‑time travelers, prolonging delays.

In Croatia, the A1 and A2 motorways are experiencing multi‑kilometre queues, especially between the Lučko toll station and the Bosiljevo 2 interchange, and on the A2 stretch near Trakošćan where a six‑kilometre line of cars extends into Slovenia. Similar bottlenecks are reported on the A3 and surrounding routes, prompting speed limits and safety warnings.

Serbia’s border crossings with Croatia are also seeing long lines, notably at Horgoš and Bajakovo, while Montenegro has deployed mobile speed‑control units on major highways. Slovenia reports kilometre‑long queues on the Ljubljana bypass, the coastal highway and routes toward the Croatian border, compounded by vehicle breakdowns and road works.

Traffic authorities in all affected countries have urged drivers to plan trips carefully, keep safe distances, observe speed limits and avoid risky overtaking as the summer travel surge continues.
