Serbia and Romania to begin gas pipeline construction in 2025

Serbia and Romania are advancing plans for a new natural gas interconnection to enhance energy security and diversify supply routes. Dubravka Đedović Handanović, Serbia's Minister of Mining and Energy in a technical mandate, announced that tender procedures for the project are expected to launch soon, with construction slated to begin early next year.

Technical documentation for the 13-kilometer Serbian section near the Romanian border is largely complete. The project is supported by a gas sector development program recently approved by the World Bank, which aims to improve energy reliability through strategic infrastructure investments. This program includes the construction of approximately 150 kilometers of pipeline to connect the new interconnection with underground gas storage in Banatski Dvor, as well as Belgrade, Pančevo, and the northern route toward Horgoš.

During discussions with Romanian Ambassador Silvia Davidoiu, officials noted that the interconnection is significant for both nations. For Romania, it supports the gasification of internal regions and strengthens its position as an energy supplier. Future cooperation may also include the construction of a product pipeline to facilitate the exchange of petroleum derivatives.
