Balkan natural gas infrastructure development
Overview
Various Balkan nations are advancing natural gas interconnection projects to enhance regional energy security and diversify supply routes.
In Bosnia and Herzegovina, the South Gas Interconnection project aims to link the country to Croatia’s gas infrastructure. Officials suggest this connection will provide access to the European energy market, reduce vulnerability, and potentially transform the nation into an energy hub for Southeast Europe during the transition to renewable energy.
Simultaneously, Serbia and Romania are preparing to begin construction on a new gas pipeline in 2025. Supported by a World Bank development program, the project includes a 13-kilometer Serbian section and approximately 150 kilometers of pipeline to connect the interconnection with underground storage and major cities. The initiative is intended to support gasification in Romania and strengthen its role as an energy supplier.
