Serbia announces nuclear program development at Belgrade energy conference

A conference titled ‘Energy as a Pillar of Growth – System Stability and Economic Competitiveness’ was held in Belgrade at the Serbian Chamber of Commerce. Organized by Wireless Media Group and Mondo INC, the event brought together representatives from the energy sector, business community, and various institutions to discuss the development of the Serbian and regional energy systems through 2040.

Minister of Mining and Energy Dubravka Đedović Handanović addressed the conference, noting that Serbia has maintained supply security despite global conflicts and low Danube water levels. She stated that the country is in the ‘first phase of developing a nuclear program’ and aims for greater energy security and a transition to cleaner sources. Total planned investments for these goals amount to 14.4 billion euros.

Key discussion topics included the integration of regional electricity markets, the role of digitalization, and the need for skilled personnel to support new investment phases. Strategic projects mentioned include the development of the Đerdap 3 reversible hydroelectric plant in cooperation with Japanese partners and the expansion of renewable energy capacities, which have tripled in the last four years.
