Serbia approves joint venture with SOCAR for Niš gas plant
The Serbian government has approved a shareholder agreement between Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS), JP Srbijagas Novi Sad, and the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR). This agreement establishes a joint venture to develop, finance, build, and manage a combined cycle gas power plant in Niš.
The new facility is planned to have a capacity of up to 500 MW and will produce both electricity and thermal energy. Ownership of the joint venture will be split equally, with 50 percent held by the Serbian companies and 50 percent by the Azerbaijani company. The project is intended to enhance energy security for Serbia and support industrial development in the southern part of the country.
Construction is expected to take place in the area between Lalinac and Krušac, with a projected completion date of 2030. Preliminary feasibility studies and spatial planning for the city of Niš have already been addressed.
