Serbia discusses billion-euro gas program with World Bank

Serbia's Minister of Mining and Energy, Dubravka Đedović Handanović, met with World Bank officials to discuss a new multi-year gas program valued at nearly one billion euros. The initiative aims to develop the country's internal gas infrastructure and is considered a key component of Serbia's European integration and reform agenda.

The program will be implemented in several phases. The first phase involves constructing the Niš-Velika Plana gas pipeline section and preparing technical documentation for subsequent projects. Future phases include expanding existing gas storage facilities, building new storage sites, and constructing a pipeline from Mokrin to Belgrade. The program also includes studies on the readiness of the infrastructure for hydrogen transport.

Structural reforms in the gas sector are nearing completion following the adoption of a new Gas Law. This includes the establishment of the company Gas Infrastruktura to manage national infrastructure and the certification of Transportgas Srbija as an independent system operator. These changes are intended to maximize the potential of existing and future interconnections with North Macedonia and Romania.
