Aleksandar Vučić resigns as President of Serbia

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has resigned from his position, seven months before the end of his second term. The decision follows nearly two years of anti-government protests fueled by public dissatisfaction and allegations of corruption. A major catalyst for the unrest was the November 2024 collapse of a railway station canopy in Novi Sad, which killed 16 people.

Ana Brnabić, the President of the National Assembly and former Prime Minister, has assumed the role of Acting President. Under Serbian law, she can hold the position for a maximum of 90 days, during which time new presidential elections must be organized.

Vučić does not intend to exit politics; he is seeking to lead the Serbian Progressive Party list in the upcoming early parliamentary elections, scheduled for October 25, with the goal of becoming Prime Minister. He has characterized the upcoming electoral contest as uncertain and has addressed various political pressures facing the country.
