Serbia faces political and media freedom challenges ahead of October elections
Serbia is preparing for high-stakes parliamentary elections scheduled for October, amid concerns regarding political stability and media freedom. Following the November 2024 Novi Sad railway station canopy collapse, the country has seen sustained civic mobilization and new networks of trust outside traditional opposition structures.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has warned that journalists face increasing threats of violence and hostility. The watchdog urged the government of President Aleksandar Vucic to ensure reporters can cover the polls safely. CPJ noted that since Vucic took power in 2012, the ruling party has gradually established control over mainstream media, often characterizing critical outlets as enemies of the state.
Observers note that while Serbia seeks European Union membership, the process has stalled due to accusations of democratic backsliding. The upcoming election will test whether recent student-led mobilization can translate into electoral power against a ruling party with significant organizational and media advantages.
