Serbia launches design tender for Đerdap 3 pumped‑storage plant

Serbia's Ministry of Mining and Energy has opened a public procurement procedure worth about €5.3 million to commission the general design, feasibility study and environmental assessment for the Đerdap 3 pumped‑storage hydropower project. The tender seeks a consultant or consortium to develop plans for an 1,200‑2,400 MW plant that would store excess renewable electricity by pumping water from the existing Đerdap 1 reservoir into upper reservoirs, then generate power during peak demand. The design phase will evaluate reservoir sites, hydraulic head of around 400 m and integration with the national grid. Bids are due by 20 August 2026.

In May 2026, Bosnia and Herzegovina exported 644 GWh of electricity, a 31.7 % increase over the same month a year earlier, while imports fell by 28.6 % to 357 GWh. Total gross generation reached 1,106 GWh, driven by thermal plants (60 % of output), hydro (27.3 %) and solar‑wind sources (12.7 %). Net production was 1,016 GWh, up from 766 GWh a year prior. The surge reflects higher output from thermal (430 GWh to 663 GWh) and renewable (98 GWh to 141 GWh) facilities.
