Serbia reports 36,101 pigs lost to African swine fever

African swine fever has affected seven districts, 13 municipalities, and 62 settlements across Serbia since the beginning of the year. According to Vladimir Nikolić, acting director of the Forest Administration, a total of 36,101 pigs have died or been euthanized due to the virus.

While officials report a recent decrease in new infection cases, strict biosecurity measures remain in place. These include disinfection barriers, vehicle and personnel disinfection, and mandatory logging of all individuals entering forested areas. In high-risk regions such as Srem, Mačva, and Kolubara, as well as the Belgrade area, movement controls have been intensified.

Branislav Stankov, executive director for hunting at the public enterprise Vojvodinašume, noted that the virus has been recorded in 16 of the 17 hunting grounds managed by the company. The only area currently unaffected is the Subotica forest in northern Vojvodina. In certain areas like the Kupinovo hunting ground, hunting has been suspended for 60 days, and access to fenced areas for wild boar is strictly limited to gamekeepers to prevent further spread.
