Serbia to grant state honors to convicted war criminal Ratko Mladić
The Serbian government has announced that Ratko Mladić, the former military leader of the Bosnian Serbs, will be buried with the highest military and state honors. This decision follows Mladić's death on August 27 at a detention facility in The Hague, where he was serving a life sentence.
Mladić was convicted by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia for genocide, specifically regarding the Srebrenica massacre, as well as war crimes and crimes against humanity. His death and the planned state funeral have sparked intense backlash in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia, as well as criticism from Serbian opposition figures.
Serbian Justice Minister Nenad Vujić confirmed the intention to provide state honors, while President Aleksandar Vučić noted that the state would organize the ceremony with dignity if the family chooses to bury him in Serbia. Mladić's family has expressed a desire for him to be buried in Belgrade.
