Serbian Basketball League season start delayed by club voting deadlock

The start of the 2026/27 season of the Basketball League of Serbia (KLS) is uncertain because the league’s governing body and its clubs could not secure the two‑thirds majority required to adopt four key documents – the competition calendar, competition regulations, disciplinary rules and the financial plan.

The president of the Association of KLS Clubs sent an electronic voting request to all participating clubs on 30 July, with a midnight deadline on 31 July. Thirteen clubs (Kolubara, Mega, Sloboda, Sloga, Mladost, Borac, SPD Radnički, Metalac, Niš, Vojvodina, BKK Radnički, Crvena zvezda and Tamiš) voted in favour, while Spartak, Zlatibor, OKK Beograd and Dinamik voted against; Borac Zemun, Partizan, Čačak 94 and Hercegovac abstained, and FMP did not respond. Neither the 28 July presidency meeting nor the subsequent 48‑hour vote achieved the required super‑majority.

Under article 40 of the Association’s statute, the unresolved decisions are now transferred to the competition director, who must consult the referee commissioner before finalising the calendar, regulations and financial plan. The Association has said all clubs will be promptly informed of the director’s decision, but it remains unclear whether the solution will satisfy dissenting clubs or trigger a deeper organisational crisis ahead of the season.
