Serbian Education Minister criticizes university political involvement
Serbian Education Minister Dejan Vuk Stanković stated that maintaining normal communication between the state and universities is difficult while student or student-professor lists are participating in elections. He noted that while the state is the primary funder of universities, some institutions attempt to act as independent islands, sometimes bypassing legal norms.
Stanković emphasized that current regulations prohibit political organizing within the educational system. He argued that the educational system can only fulfill its purpose if it is fully depoliticized, asserting that while individuals may hold political views, such activities must remain outside the classroom and working hours.
Regarding the upcoming academic year, the Minister confirmed that preparations are complete for schools to begin on September 1. He noted that there are no obstacles to a regular start and expects approximately 62,500 first-grade students to enroll.
