Serbian education system management tensions

Serbian Education Minister Dejan Vuk Stanković continues to face criticism regarding the management of the national education system. While previously accused by Tatjana Marković-Topalović of "complete ignorance" regarding teacher shortages, the Minister has recently focused on the need for depoliticization. Stanković argued that communication between the state and universities is hindered when student or professor lists participate in elections, asserting that institutions sometimes act as "independent islands" by bypassing legal norms. He maintained that while individuals hold political views, such activities must remain outside the classroom to ensure the system fulfills its purpose.

Newer tensions have emerged regarding the influence of religion in education. Vladimir Obradović of the Freedom and Justice Party (SSP) accused Stanković of prioritizing religious ideology over scientific advancement. Specifically, the SSP criticized proposals to return Jova Gymnasium in Novi Sad to the Serbian Orthodox Church. Obradović noted a decline in scientific research, claiming the last recorded scientific article in the eNauka system was published in 2018.

In response to these challenges, the SSP proposed an alternative policy featuring an additional 75 million euros annually for research, protected university autonomy, free textbooks, and a minimum teacher salary of 250,000 dinars. Meanwhile, Stanković has reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening the role of the Serbian Orthodox Church within the national education system and announced plans to establish new higher education institutions. Despite these debates, the Minister confirmed that preparations are complete for the upcoming academic year, with approximately 62,500 first-grade students expected to enroll on September 1.
