Serbian Firefighters Redeployed to Combat Wildfires in Spain

A Serbian fire‑rescue unit of roughly 40 personnel, equipped with 17 vehicles, two trailers and a Super Puma helicopter, has been moved from its base in Zamora to Ponferrada to continue battling the severe wildfires raging across central Spain this summer.

The team, which previously helped contain large fires in the Castile‑León region, is now operating alongside Spanish, German and other international crews under the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism. Team leader Davor Vidović said, “When one fire is under control, we are already on the way to the next,” underscoring the mission’s nonstop nature and the aim of protecting lives, homes and the environment.

The Serbian Ministry of Internal Affairs presented the deployment as a demonstration of Serbia’s commitment to international disaster assistance, noting that on‑site decisions are vital for safeguarding people and property.
