Serbian Orthodox Church celebrates feast of the Mandylion

The Serbian Orthodox Church and its believers are observing a day dedicated to several saints and the Mandylion, also known as the Image of Jesus Christ Not Made by Hands. The commemorations include Saint Eustathius, the second Serbian Archbishop, as well as Venerable Roman, Venerable Raphael of Banat, and others.

According to religious tradition, the Mandylion originated in the Syrian city of Edessa. King Abgar, suffering from a severe disease, sent a messenger to Jesus Christ requesting healing. Tradition states that Jesus wiped his face with a cloth, leaving his miraculous image imprinted upon it. This cloth was sent to Abgar, who experienced healing, and was later placed above the city gates of Edessa.

In 944, the sacred icon was transferred from Edessa to Constantinople, an event commemorated by the current feast day. The celebration follows the new calendar on August 29.
