Overview

The Orthodox Church observes the feast of the Translation of the Holy Mandylion, also referred to as the ‘Image of Jesus Christ Not Made by Hands’. The religious tradition commemorates the movement of the sacred cloth from Edessa to Constantinople in 944.

According to tradition, the Mandylion bears a miraculous image of Christ’s face imprinted on a linen cloth after he wiped his face to heal King Abgar of Edessa. While the Bulgarian Orthodox Church observes the feast on August 16, the Serbian Orthodox Church and its believers observe the commemoration on August 29 following the new calendar. The Serbian celebrations also include the commemoration of Saint Eustathius, the second Serbian Archbishop, and other venerable figures.
