The High Public Prosecutor's Office in Belgrade has ordered a police investigation into allegations of systematic and unauthorized destruction of official documents at the headquarters of the Republic Fund for Pension and Disability Insurance (PIO Fund). Criminal complaints have been filed against PIO Fund Director Relja Ognjenović and other unidentified persons for suspected abuse of office, negligent work, and destruction of evidence.

The Association of Free and Independent Trade Unions (ASNS) claims that shredding machines have been used behind locked doors to destroy potentially compromising documentation. Union members reported successfully rescuing several black bags containing shredded paper as evidence. The investigation is also looking into whether the Fund used Pošta Srbije to distribute a letter from the President to all pensioners.

In response, the PIO Fund stated that the destruction of documents is part of regular business operations conducted according to ISO standards to protect citizens' personal data. The Fund maintains that its processes are transparent and that management remains available to state authorities. Additionally, the prosecution has requested information from the State Audit Institution regarding the Fund's financial management since 2022.
