EU Delegation Head: Election conditions will impact Serbia's EU path

Andreas von Beckerath, the Head of the EU Delegation to Serbia, stated that upcoming election conditions and the campaign period will significantly influence Serbia’s EU accession process. While noting that Serbia possesses the capacity to accelerate its progress toward membership, von Beckerath emphasized that this potential must be paired with political will and the implementation of substantive reforms. Key areas for improvement include the rule of law, media freedoms, and adherence to democratic principles and values.

Von Beckerath noted that the EU does not interfere in elections but will monitor conditions to ensure voters can make informed decisions without pressure or intimidation. He highlighted the importance of the public service broadcaster providing equal access to all political parties. While the Serbian Assembly has adopted certain laws aligned with OSCE/ODIHR recommendations, von Beckerath stressed the necessity of their practical implementation, particularly regarding the separation of state and party functions, voter list transparency, and media access.

Regarding Cluster 3, he acknowledged that not all EU member states support its opening, noting that the European Commission provides assessments while member states make the final decisions. An annual report covering these critical areas is expected to be released later this autumn.
