Serbia reports 42 young road deaths this year as summer fatalities average two per day

Since the start of 2026, 42 young people have lost their lives in traffic accidents in Serbia, said Branko Stamatović, deputy director of the Serbian Traffic Safety Agency. He highlighted that a recent survey found one in six or seven drivers were under the influence of alcohol, with about 16 % admitting to having driven after drinking in the past month. The agency’s "Na putu do nula, sa nula promila" campaign, launched in May, aims to raise awareness about the dangers of drunk driving, especially among young motorists. Stamatović noted a downward trend in fatalities compared with the same period last year and stressed that systematic measures are being aligned with European practices.

Overall, 198 people have died in road incidents this year, with a quarter of the victims aged 15‑30. Summer months, weekend evenings and night hours see the highest risk. A related report points out that about two people die daily during the summer season, prompting intensified traffic controls across the country.
